Tour Details

Mount Murud is the highest peak in the Kelabit Highlands and, indeed, the highest peak in Sarawak. It is part of the recently-created Pulong Tau National Park although at present there are no significant Park facilities or anywhere near as many travellers as you would encounter in Mulu National Park. However, with incredible flora and fauna, stunning rock formations, unbelievable panoramic views, and ample shelters to make carrying a tent with you quite unnecessary if you hike from Ba’kelalan, this is one of the finest hikes in Borneo, if not the entire Malay archipelago.

REMARK:
Mount Murud is a Holy Mountain, alcoholic drink and smoking is prohibited.

Day 2

Today your mountain trek adventure to the summit of Mount Murud will begin! With a height of 2,423 metres above sea level Mount Murud is not only the highest peak in the Northern Highlands, but also the highest mountain in Sarawak. Thanks to its unique flora and fauna, Mount Murud is now a protected area within the Pulong Tau National Park. Stunning rock formations coupled with breath-taking panoramic views will satisfy every mountaineers desires and simple shelters along the way render it unnecessary to carry loads of camping equipment for the 3 days’ hike.
After breakfast at the homestay, start off with a 4-wheel-drive of about 45 minutes to 1 hour (depending on weather and road condition; roads tend to be bumpy) to Lepo Bunga, a local shelter hut surrounded by forest. A typical local lunch will be prepared and served here at Lepo Bunga, before you start to hike up to the peak of Batu Linanit (about 4 hours). Weather permitting you might have amazing views of the Ba’Kelalan valley, the distant Mount Mulu and Indonesia from here. You might also notice the twin peaks of Batu Lawi, a sacred mountain in the belief of the natives as well as a historical site related to the Japanese occupation during World War 2. This mountain served as landmark when soldiers of the Australian Z Special Unit were air-dropped behind enemy’s lines and into the interior of Borneo’s forests.
Proceed to Church Camp (roughly another 1 hour to walk), which marks the end of today’s hike with a total distance of 9 km. Church Camp consists of several simple wooden huts and was built to give shelter for the participants of the biennial Christian pilgrimage to Mount Murud. Being the tallest peak in Sarawak, Mount Murud is the place where local Christians feel closest to God.
Dinner and overnight at Church Camp (thin mattress on the floor; very basic sanitary facilities with squatting toilet and dip & splash washing area)

Day 3 (B/L/D)

Time to tackle the summit of Mount Murud! It takes roughly 3.5 hours to reach the summit.
As you venture higher and higher you will see different types of forests and vegetation. In fact, at the mountain slopes of Mount Murud you will find lots of interesting and unique plants, including rare orchids and insect-eating pitcher plants, many of them being endemic to the higher altitudes of the montane rainforests or even to this particular mountain! Therefore, this mountain has been of great interest to many naturalists in the past.
The British Army Officer and passionate amateur zoologist J. C. Moulton made the first recorded attempt to climb Mount Murud in 1914 when he was the curator of the Sarawak Museum, but failed to reach the summit. He tried and failed a second time in 1920. The first known successful ascent wa
[11/12, 9:10 PM] P.Tadem Buas: in 1922 by Dr. Eric Mjöberg, a Swedish zoologist and successor of J. C. Moulton as curator of the Sarawak Museum.
The total hiking distance to the peak and back to Church Camp is about 7 km.
All meals included. Overnight at Church Camp.
